Stunning, Beautiful & Ours!

Many weeks ago, a friend from years gone by, agreed to use his artistic talent to create a sign for the gate that leads to our SAN MIGUEL OLIVE FARM. On Sunday, it was "unveiled." We approached slowly, excited to finally see the results of his labor. We were thrilled with all we saw. Amazing detail that perfectly captured the feel of our family farm.

We thank Brent, and his wife, Sheila, for how they worked as a team to give us exactly what we had wanted.

We not only savor our oil, but enjoy completely, our friendships!

The Olives Are Coming, The Olives Are Coming!!

We have been eagerly awaiting this day! The month of May was full of changes on our beautiful trees.

First we had the tiny buds appearing.

A week later, flowers appeared.

The last day of May, tiny olives were seen!!!

These are our potential harvest for 2012 :)

While all this has been happening, we have been busy irrigating, adding emitters to the now larger trees, and removing any suckers at the bottom of the trunks.

We continue to feel so fortunate to be learning something so special...how to grow olive trees and produce a fine product.  SAN MIGUEL OLIVE FARM EVOO!

Savor with us!

Weed By Weed

April showers bring........WEEDS! No doubt about that, here at San Miguel Olive Farm!

But we are in the "tackling" mood, and so with tools in hand, we head down to the farm to the young trees that are being choked by the colorful "Vetch." Every day we head down to the farm to the new trees that being choked by the colorful "Vetch!!!" :), plus numerous and sundry other hearty weeds.

This tree has just breathed a sigh of "Thank You!"

As we weed, we are noticing even the young trees are starting to bud.

It won't be long before we see evidence of the first fruit of the season!

In the meantime, the "one armed hoer" chops away.....
and his partner in weeding takes a rest with one of the Golden Girls.

We'll keep weeding, and you keep savoring our San Miguel Olive Farm EVOO!

LA International Olive Oil Competition Announces Winners!

We were excited once again to find we won another medal! This time in the LA International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition!

This has been such an encouraging year for us. All of our enjoyable, but hard work, has given us amazing results in the competitions we have entered.

Here is some information on this latest competition:

The Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition has grown from a 25-entry beginning to a truly spectacular array of the finest international oils. The list of Northern Hemisphere countries represented is impressive: Croatia, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Morocco, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey and the United States.
“Our competition has become well known for its great competence,” said Corti. “Our judges have a great deal of experience and are talented tasters.”
The competition itself is not open to the public, but they will have an opportunity to taste the winning olive oils at FUN Decanted, a wine, spirits, beer and evoo festival June 23 at Fairplex and at the 2012 L.A. County Fair, where winning olive oils will be featured at the Fair’s Wine, Beer & Spirits Marketplace.
The Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition is judged in two categories, domestic and international, and separated according to regional designations and fruitiness intensity levels. The competition also includes flavored olive oils.

A Bright Moment In Our Day!

Yesterday we had a special visitor to our olive farm! Patty Darragh, Executive Director of the California Olive Oil Council, was passing thru on her way back to Berkeley, and stopped to say "hi."

She was impressed with our beautiful trees that we purchased from Bruce Golino's Santa Cruz Olive Tree Nursery. The trees in the background were planted in 2007, when they were two years old.

The recent rains have been most welcome. We have much to do in the days ahead, and both of us look forward to the work and reward in the coming days and weeks.

Give our award winning EVOO a taste, and let us know your comments! We'd love to hear from you.

Savor the oil!

Back to reality!

We hear that the "gold" and "best in show" stickers will be arriving soon! Plaques are being engraved. When they arrive we have a special place on our wall, waiting just for them!

But right now......

Trees need tending.

It was a beautiful day. We grabbed our hoes and gloves and set off for the olive trees. The new trees have no canopy yet, so we need to weed around their base, so the sunlight and water can help them grow to be big!

Today we had some company as we worked.

This is Spaz, our granddaughters' kitten, who is just learning about the great outdoors. He thinks he is tougher than The Golden Girls (Kendal's two chickies that help with keeping the olive trees bug free.)

Next to make an appearance, was a baby rattler. No picture of him today! Because it is still cool out, he was a bit sluggish. That won't last, and we need to be aware as we work outside.

Perhaps we will get some rain this week, which would be great.

Until next time, keep savoring our award winning EVOO!

A Little of This & A Smidge of That!

As I watch our sheep grazing peacefully, I find myself reflecting about the wonderful year behind us and thinking with excitement what is ahead for the year 2012.

Olive oil competitions, state fairs, olive festivals and our farm being part of the olive growers industry in California.

This past year 2010-2011 we won two silver medals! One International and one Central Coast.  San Miguel Olive Farm produces quality extra virgin olive oil.

Our labels are informative for the consumer. We include acid level, peroxide value and harvest date. The acid level and peroxide value determine whether or not the oil is EVOO (extra virgin olive oil).  As of October of 2011, California legislation has tightened the standards of the labeling of EVOO olive oil. Eventually we hope for truth in all labeling.

The acid level determines the quality. The peroxide value determines shelf life. The harvest date determines freshness of the oil.

Our acid level (0.02) is extremely lower than the 0.5 standard set by the COOC (California Olive Oil Council). The IOOC (International Olive Oil Council) has a standard of 0.8. Our oil has excellent quality, it smokes at a much higher temperature when used in cooking, and the oil remains stable as it ages. The lower the numbers, the higher the quality.

A low peroxide value (7 mEq/Kg)in our young, fresh oil, suggests a longer shelf life. Both the COOC and IOOC have values of less than 20 mEq/Kg. The lower the number, the longer the shelf life.

Our grassy, herbal, slightly robust EVOO will be available February 2012.

We look forward to your first taste of our late harvest 2011 Tuscan EVOO.

Our supply is limited, so "first come, first served."
